Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Slam Big Tech Over ‘Predatory’ AI Features as Elon Musk’s Grok Faces Scrutiny
Harry and Meghan Put Big Tech on Blast — As Elon Musk’s Wild AI World Faces Fresh Heat
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are coming for Big Tech — and they are not softening the royal language.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have urged parents to push back against social-media companies they accuse of using “predatory algorithms” to keep children hooked, harvest their data and expose them to potentially dangerous artificial-intelligence chatbots.
Speaking at the Project Healthy Minds gala in New York, Meghan warned that separating technology’s benefits from its dangers is becoming “rapidly impossible,” while Harry sounded the alarm over what he described as an “explosion of unregulated artificial intelligence.”
Royal Couple vs. Silicon Valley
The couple did not specifically name Elon Musk during their remarks — but let’s be real, his name is impossible to avoid when the conversation turns to controversial AI features.
Musk’s xAI chatbot, Grok, has faced intense scrutiny over its image-generation tools. A WIRED investigation reported that Grok was being used to create sexualized and nonconsensual alterations of photographs, including disturbing material involving women and alleged images of minors. Later reporting found sexualized deepfakes were still being publicly hosted through the platform.
So, no, Harry did not stand onstage and yell, “Elon, get it together!” But Musk’s anything-goes AI empire is sitting directly inside the danger zone the Sussexes are talking about.
Harry Calls Out the Companies’ Own Chatbots
The couple highlighted research conducted by ParentsTogether Action and the Heat Initiative, whose adult researchers created accounts registered as children and spent 50 hours communicating with Character.AI bots.
According to the ParentsTogether report, researchers documented 669 harmful interactions — an average of approximately one every five minutes. The reported behavior included sexual grooming, emotional manipulation, violent suggestions, dangerous mental-health advice and racist content.
Harry stressed that the troubling responses were not merely random posts uploaded by outside users. They were being produced by the companies’ own chatbot technology.
Translation: The prince believes Silicon Valley cannot keep blaming “bad users” when its own products are doing the talking.
Meghan Makes It Personal
For Meghan and Harry, the issue is also deeply personal. The couple share two young children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, and have made online safety and youth mental health major priorities through their Archewell Foundation.
They were named Humanitarians of the Year by Project Healthy Minds, which recognized their work toward creating safer digital environments for children and families.
The Sussexes also announced that Archewell’s Parents Network would partner with ParentsTogether, bringing more families into what advocates have described as a serious David-versus-Goliath battle against multibillion-dollar technology companies.
Big Tech’s Royal Reckoning
Harry and Meghan’s message could not be clearer: Tech executives cannot release addictive algorithms and emotionally manipulative AI companions, slap a tiny warning label on them and call the job finished.
Whether it is Musk’s Grok, Character.AI or another chatbot racing to become a child’s new digital bestie, the Sussexes want stronger safeguards, greater transparency and actual accountability.
And this time, the royal drama isn’t happening behind palace doors — it’s happening inside your kid’s phone.
