Grok 4.6 Released: New xAI Model Surges in AI Benchmarks and Challenges GPT-5.6

Grok 4.6 Is Here — Elon Musk’s Latest AI Jumps Up the Benchmarks

Elon Musk just dropped another AI upgrade — and Grok is climbing the leaderboard FAST.

SpaceXAI officially rolled out Grok 4.6 on Wednesday, August 12, barely a month after Grok 4.5 arrived, and early benchmark results suggest Musk’s AI team just made another pretty serious leap.

The new model was built with complex tasks and long-running AI agents in mind — basically, less “answer this question” and more “here’s a giant job, go figure it out.”

📊 Grok Just Took a Big Benchmark Jump

Independent AI benchmarking group Artificial Analysis says Grok 4.6 gained roughly five points over Grok 4.5 on its Intelligence Index.

For perspective, Grok 4.5 was sitting at around 54 on the index. That puts the new Grok 4.6 at roughly 59 — right in the neighborhood of OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol and suddenly knocking on the door of the very top models in the industry.

Here’s roughly how the top of the leaderboard stacks up:

  • Claude Opus 5: up to 61
  • Claude Fable 5: 60
  • Grok 4.6: ~59
  • GPT-5.6 Sol: up to 59
  • Kimi K3: 57
  • Grok 4.5: 54

Translation? Grok is back in the heavyweight fight. Artificial Analysis says the new model puts SpaceXAI alongside OpenAI at the intelligence frontier, with Anthropic still holding the edge at the very top.

💰 Musk Is Playing the Price Card Too

Raw brainpower isn’t the only flex here. One of Grok’s biggest selling points continues to be bang for your buck.

Artificial Analysis says Grok 4.6 appears considerably cheaper to operate than several models delivering similar frontier-level performance — an increasingly huge deal for developers running AI agents that can chew through millions of tokens while working on coding, research and other extended tasks.

Musk summed up the pitch himself on X, calling Grok 4.6 “Smart, fast & amazing bang for buck.”

🚀 And Grok 4.7 Is Already Coming

And because apparently releasing one frontier AI model at a time is way too boring, Musk has already been teasing Grok 4.7.

He previously said the follow-up would improve on Grok 4.6 across the board, with even better token efficiency, although it could be slightly slower to serve.

So yeah ... the AI arms race isn’t cooling down anytime soon.

Grok 4.6 may not have taken the outright benchmark crown, but jumping from the mid-50s into territory occupied by the best OpenAI and Anthropic models is a pretty loud statement — especially if SpaceXAI can keep the price down.

And with Grok 4.7 already waiting in the wings, Musk clearly isn’t done throwing punches.
