Google Gives Schools an AI Opt-Out — but Search Comes With a Catch
Google is giving schools more control over AI. But if administrators want Google Search, there’s a catch: its AI features come along for the ride.
The company announced on November 3 that Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be off by default for K–12 student accounts unless school administrators turn them on. The changes are expected to start rolling out in early 2027, according to Education Week.
The Search Catch
Schools can enable Search separately from the Gemini products. But they won’t get an AI-free version of Google Search: Schools that want AI completely off for student accounts will also have to leave Search off.
Chris Phillips, Google’s vice president and general manager of education, told Education Week that Search and AI are deeply integrated. Translation for school leaders? They have a choice to make, but a Google Search option without AI summaries isn’t on the menu.
Why Schools Are Paying Attention
The announcement follows an August move that put Gemini inside Google Classroom for students in districts that already allowed access to Google’s AI tools. That change drew pushback from educators, parents and child-development experts, according to The Associated Press.
Google says its updated controls are intended to give school leaders more say. It’s also bringing a feature called Guided Learning to Search, with plans to pilot it in select U.S. schools later in November. The company says the feature is designed to walk students through certain homework problems rather than jump straight to answers.
Critics aren’t exactly handing Google an A for the arrangement. Josh Golin, executive director of children’s advocacy group Fairplay, told the AP that the company was pressuring schools to use its AI products and urged schools to consider other search options.
For administrators trying to keep generative AI out of student accounts, the bottom line is clear: Google’s new opt-in comes with a Search-sized decision.
